In this lesson, we'll explore the history and foundations of UDL Principles.

Many educators are challenged with teaching large groups of students; each learner has a unique cultural background and specific interests. In addition, many learners have differences that can create challenges in learning, such as visual impairment, dyslexia, and attention deficits.

Universal Design for Learning is grounded in the conviction that we should be designing learning that is accessible by all learners. UDL advocates for the implementation of effective instructional strategies and multiple forms of engagement.

The History of UDL

The term UDL stands for Universal Design for Learning, a practical tool for guiding course design to ensure that every learner succeeds, based on scientific insights into how humans learn. It stems from the barriers-free movement of the 1950's, and in the 1960's, the Disability Civil Rights act and the Accessible Design movement in the 1970's. In the 80's, an architectural term called architectural universal design coined by architect Ron Mace gave way for Universal Design.

Shifts in UDL can be closely related to changes seen in architecture. Over the course of several decades, starting in the 60's, the general public began to realize that many structures were not accessible to all people. Certain structures were not designed to be accessible by wheelchairs, or elderly people who are not comfortable climbing stairs. Architects responded by building ramps and elevators to make these structures easily accessible by people with specific limitations.

Eventually, architectural universal design led to the creation of Universal Design for Learning. Similarly to architectural universal design, these principles ensures that learning is barrier-free and meets the needs of all learners.
